Welcome to 2026! This is our first newsletter for 2026 and it seemed an ideal opportunity as the new President of TSNSW to say hello. The majority of our members would know me from our many tour-naments and those that don't will hopefully catch up with me during a tournament this year.

This is a huge year for TSNSW. As you would be aware we are hosting the Australian Seniors National Teams Carnival and Individual Championships in January 2027 in Newcastle. These events will require a great deal of planning and effort but I am confident we can make these events to remember. We are always looking for people who can contribute some time and effort to assist us.

Apart from the planning we are also going to need players! Its never too early to start planning your team. For those who have never played this event before please don't hesitate to reach out and ask for some details. We took 16 teams to Gold Coast in January this year, I think we should be able to double that at least as the home state. Apart from those huge events we always needs players to support our tournaments. I am hoping to make 2026 the year of participation. Our membership is near 1000 members but we aren't seeing enough of those on court! We have some tournaments that are very successful every year, with Forster, Nelson Bay and Ulladulla all getting well over 200 players. But we have many smaller tournaments that are struggling for numbers so we need you out there and playing to keep these tournaments going. If players could all attend 1 or 2 more tournaments each then you might just be the difference in keeping the tournament running. There are a bunch of dedicated people who have been working for years in some tournaments and it would be a shame to see them fold due to a lack of participation. We have had at least 5 tournaments shut down in the past few years.

This year also represents the 20th anniversary of the Newcastle Mixed Teams event, now renamed the Robyn Castle Mixed teams. We are back in Newcastle this year in the June long weekend and very keen to get 3 divisions up and running again. If you have ever played this before please come back his year and celebrate the 20 years with us. Of course new players would be most welcome. Entries will be limited to the first 18 teams in.

I'd like to thank the people who put up their hands this year to stand on our TSNSW committee. None of this happens without people doing a lot of work behind the scenes and I hope all our members ap-preciate their time and effort.

I'll close off by wishing you all the best for 2026 and hoping to see you at many of our tournaments during the year. Feel free to come up and say hello.

Carol had remained in tennis all her life, whilst playing & always keen to help in all matters pertaining to the betterment of tennis.

In 1991, Carol was invited to join the state selectors (one from each state) to choose the Australian representatives for the Annual World team events, a position Carol held for 27 years.

Carol also represented Australia in the World Seniors for over 30 years.

Closer to home, Carol was a selector for over 20 years in the placement of players for the NSW teams in the Australian Senior Championships as in our early senior years, players were not permitted to select their own teams.

Carol worked tirelessly on the Tennis Seniors NSW committee for many years & always willing to help …….. in 2005 the decision was made to hold the Australian Seniors Teams\Individual championships in Newcastle…….It was a huge success & carol was responsible for all the clothing & tennis accessory sales plus players packs…… that clothing is still being worn today…….. great quality at an affordable price as Carol bargained hard with the distributor.

In 2019 Carol was thrilled & honoured to be awarded & named the first Legend for Tennis Seniors Australia in the Hall of Fame.

Always first to help & Carol’s advice was always sound…..

Congratulations Carol Campling , a very worthy recipient of Life Membership TSNSW 2024

            Dear Members

Our Tennis Seniors NSW Annual General Meeting was scheduled to be held at Rockdale on Sunday 15

December 2024. Unfortunately, we were unable to hold the meeting as it is a requirement to have at least 15 members in attendance. We had 3 apologies from the committee leaving only 6 committee members in attendance and 5 other members present.

It is a disappointing result given we have over 600 plus paid members.

As a result of this outcome, we have rescheduled the AGM for the 6 January 2025 to commence at 6.15pm prior to the NSW State Team’s dinner in Adelaide. By holding this meeting on this date, it will afford other members who are not present in Adelaide to attend via teams which a link will be shared with any members who requests the link prior to the meeting date.

The TSNSW committee is hopeful of a greater attendance by offering a team’s meeting.

Julie was so keen to reach 40 & play veterans' tennis as our Association was named then. (joined 1984).

Julie had been a senior committee member of North Western Suburbs Tennis Association (where she commenced competition tennis as an 11-year-old & as she was now a "Veteran", felt the urge to join the Veterans committee to hopefully bring a few ideas to Veterans Tennis.... 1986.

The first President whom I had worked with being Greg Vaughan who also had considerable help from Kevin Winter. Then Barry, Plucknett, Peter Kilborn, Noel Fraser, Charles Price, Enid Besant Ryan then our Mick Bruton who took our Association to greater heights.

Julie was working full time as a Relationship Manager with Westpac. Julie took over the running of the 200 CLUB from Kevin Winter & we donated $1000 to a cancer fund for children ( i.e. Kids with Cancer / Camp Quality or similar). this happened every year & the 200 people who gave the donations ($10) had the chance to win their money back every day for 50 days & the last day $500..... Julie ran this for many years until it was decided to donate other ways. Julie also sold raffle tickets constantly & all of our members were always very generous; this was then taken over by President Mick Bruton and made a huge contribution.

The committee decided that we needed to lift our tracksuits to a more professional level & after the new design was chosen, Julie sold the suits to as many members as she could. In those days nearly every member was sporting a Tennis Seniors NSW Tracksuit...

In 2005 whilst working for Westpac Julie was able to arrange Westpac to donate all the caps and drink bottles for the players packs at our Australian Championship, held in Newcastle. Also securing sponsorship of $5000 for Incidentals and Sponsoring the Teams Dinner.

Julie was part of the organizing committee for 1997 World Titles in Newcastle, which was a huge success to everyone working tirelessly for 12 months to ensure we made Australia proud and successful.

Julie organized many morning teas with the stars held for the Federation Cup, also with the Friends of Tennis NSW & The Tennis Museum. Julie was also a selector for the NSW Senior/Veterans State teams for many years.

Julie also enjoyed playing Sydney badge over the years, night competitions and always playing country tournaments during this she was able to recruit many players to join Tennis Seniors NSW. Always enjoying the camaraderie with others who also had the same goals to spread the word of our fabulous Tennis Seniors NSW often over a red or two!!!!!

Julie has stated she is extremely humbled by her nomination for Life Membership of TSNSW. It is a very proud moment as she reaches her twilight years (her words). She only retired from the committee because she felt it needed our younger generation to revitalize Tennis Seniors TSW

TENNIS SENIORS NSW: STRATEGY PLANNING DAY

Within the coming months, TSNSW is holding a Strategic Discussion or Planning Day. This provides an opportunity for TSNSW to reflect on past and current practices and plan for the future.

The aim for this Planning Day is to improve our membership experience and encourage as many people as possible (over 30 years) to enjoy and experience playing the game of tennis.

The purpose of the planning day includes the following:

Review TNSW’s current operational practices in the context of best practice.

Develop future directions for TSNSW (Vision) and Core Purpose.

Develop new and improved strategies consistent with the Core Purpose that would align TSNSW’s future directions.

TSNSW seeks your input into current practices and ways we can improve TSNSW membership tennis experience.

We would be grateful if you could respond to our questionnaire comprising 4 questions. The design of the questions is open to facilitate as much input from you as possible.

It is intended that your feedback or contribution will be collated without editing and we guarantee anonymity. Your comments will be presented to the Committee for their upcoming Strategy Planning Day.

Well done to all teams, in particular the NSW Ladies 40s team consisting of Captain Cathie LONG, Belinda BARRETT, Sonia HYDE, Sharon KILLEN and Allison CREALY who, with the exception of one player were all over 50 and defeated a much younger Victoria 30s team. 50 really is the new 30!!!

The 2022 Nelson Bay tournament did not disappoint with fantastic numbers, great weather and superb quality tennis. Many thanks to tournament director Steve Taylor for the huge effort he puts in each year to get this event up and running. Many thanks also to the ladies in the kitchen, gents on the BBQ and bar, Blake in the office and all others who have not been named however spent many hours volunteering their time to make Nelson Bay a signature event on our NSW Senior’s calendar.

What a wonderful weekend catching up with old friends and making new ones! Our annual TNSW Seniors Tennis Tournament was held at our Hawks Nest courts over 3 days, enjoying magnificent weather throughout. Our 46 entrants competed in Mixed, Men’s & Ladies Doubles with a warm up on the Friday’s “American Doubles”, the perfect meet and greet to get started!

Ages ranging from 30 to 80 years, prizes were hotly contested by players on the court providing lots of competitive and entertaining tennis! Our local members along with a supportive group from the local Karuah tennis club provided a welcoming atmosphere along with a great smorgasbord of food, free tea and coffee plus ice eskies on court to keep the drinks cold. All with the pounding sound of waves crashing in the background and welcoming coastal breezes in the afternoon.

End of day drinks and complimentary platters enjoyed by players every afternoon giving all an opportunity to discuss the days triumphs and losses. Lots of cheering from the sidelines with a couple of the men flipping one of the picnic tables when they sat down which provided extra entertainment for us all! Myra & Kris bought “Buddy”, their parrot, who quickly became the tournament mascot delighting everyone that came across him with Steve Taylor spending most of the afternoon with Buddy on his shoulder. Others were not so impressed!

We were also fortunate to have an Osteo and Acupuncturist on site for the duration of the tournament for players needing massage and relief for injuries. A 10am start for the last event on Sunday allowed entrants time to take a morning swim and leisurely breakfast before taking to the court for the final round. A big thank you to you all for helping us make the weekend a huge success with so many pitching in to help. See you all next year plus maybe some more new faces…all welcome!!

           For the first time in many years our major tournament was held at Rockdale Tennis Club with over 220 competitors. 20 overseas, 50 interstate and 150 NSW. Our visiting players appreciated the tournament being held so close to the airport with a licensed bar and on site restaurant providing excellent evening meals for those who travelled a long way for this MT 700 event. Many thanks to the players who manned the rollers during a very wet day 1 and great work by TDs Arthur Olsen and Steve Longworth to get every event completed on day 4. Congratulations to our winners and runners up who are listed below;

Authored by Anne ROUSE – Tennis Seniors NSW Member

I am amused when I attend Senior Tennis Tournaments and observe our warm-ups before we start playing matches. My observations lead me to ascertain there are three types of tennis players.

The diligent tennis player: They understand the importance of a warm-up and can be observed completing an off-the-court warm-up which includes a slow jog around the tennis complex, a few lunges & squats, arm stretches, and calf stretches followed by a few air racquet swings.

The lukewarm tennis player: They have some knowledge and thought that warming-up is something that should be do. So, they meander out on the court with tennis bag and drinks, placing all equipment next to their court seat. After taking out the racquet they stand at the net post, completing a couple of dynamic exercises (swinging the leg back and forth, stretching the calf, a few jogging steps on the spot and arm rotations)

The Impatient tennis player: They either have a limited awareness of the importance of warm-ups or maybe they just want to get on with the match. In either mindset, they walk out on the court, get their equipment ready, take their position at one end of the court and start hitting tennis balls. For this group, the warm-up consists of hitting a few ground strokes, volleys, smashes, and a couple of practise serves. They are straight into the intense exercise of playing tennis.

I notice many ‘impatient tennis player,’ type at the Senior Events and this group are at greatest risk of injury. You only have to do a google search – ‘how to prevent sport injuries,’ and there are hundreds of thousands of articles and advice regarding the importance of warm-up stretches, and dynamic exercises to do before you participate in intense exercise.

My own personal warm-up drill consists of a walk or slow jog around the tennis complex, leg swings, squats, butt kicks, high knees, arm rotations, and torso stretches (rotation side to side from the waist). The advantage of dynamic exercises (moving exercises while stretching) they increase the blood flow through the body which helps to prevent injury and reduces muscle soreness.

I hope this article encourages everyone to think about warm-up exercises prior to playing tennis matches in the future. Share your routines with each other and please encourage fellow players to think about warm-up exercises to preserve their bodies so we can all enjoy participating in many Senior Events.

This edition would like to provide a short player’s perspective into the World Teams event in Boca Raton, USA. Our Australian teams were picked on player rankings at the end of Oceania 2020 which was the last tournament that all Australians could get to. Due to the new Omicron corona variant and other issues, some teams were somewhat disabled with a lack of team members and gifts to provide to opponents. The Australian team was warmly welcomed by the Americans including many holiday makers and depending on arrival dates were afforded the opportunity to practice on the American green clay courts. The Australian Super Seniors only had three teams and 10 members compared to other countries with a plethora of players. The opening ceremony was held outdoors at the largest venue, Boynton Beach, a public tennis facility. It was quite windy however was wonderful meeting all our opponents. The Australian men’s 70’s were ranked 3

The Australian highlight was, of course, the win by our men’s 65 team consisting of Glenn Busby (Vic), Wayne Pascoe (NSW) and Stephen Dance (Tas). It is traditional that all Australian teams get together for a team bonding bbq and these three terrific players hosted ours. I had the pleasure of watching their final joining our three Aussie girls cheering our boys while their opponents the home team, had 300.

Numbers were down due to inclement weather with only 30 males and 2 females entered in the singles. Sunday saw 11 pairs entered. The majority of entrants were locals with very few tourists. It is hoped that Pennant Hills might see a few more members add this one to their calendar next year.

Friday saw the tournament washed out for the day and whilst the numbers dwindled from previous years, the standard was reported as good. West Port is an older tournament however continues to remain popular with locals and visitors. The tournament used both West and East Port courts and locals are looking forward to the East Port tournament.

Once again the Picton tournament director, Michael Jackson stepped in for our usual TD, Alison Radford who was still in the United Kingdom. He had another inclement start to the tournament with rain washing out the singles on Friday morning. Some tennis was played on Friday afternoon however the singles events were played later, on the 4 June 2022. The May tournament was inundated with its usual participants however it also saw a few new faces to the tournament. Numbers were down on previous years however Michael was able to keep all matches played at the Picton complex and competitors did not have to travel to other locations. Thanks to the Jackson and Barrett families for the BBQ and Brett Haines for his delicious pies.

Tournament Director Michael jackson indicated that the singles was washed out Saturday morning however there were good numbers entered which would have filled the 14 courts. Play resumed on Saturday afternoon and Sunday with event numbers similar to previous years. Michael indicated the main challenge running the tournament were late withdrawals and it appears that there is a pattern emerging with similar culprits withdrawing last minute which only creates problems for tournament directors. Members please attempt to turn up and make our director’s job just that little bit easier. Many thanks to all the volunteers who assisted with the BBQ.

In the absence of a report from the Tournament Director, TSNSW were guided by reports from tournament entrants who indicated that it was a beautiful weekend with Narooma looking forward to seeing greater numbers in 2023, showcasing what NSW South Coast has to offer.

ULLADULLA 18-20 FEBRUARY 2022

The weekend of 18-20 February saw perfect weather for the 3 days for the Ulladulla Summer Games. This year we had 230 players, the largest number for this tournament, of which for 60 players, it was their first time to Ulladulla. Our youngest player was aged 32 and our oldest was aged 90. How amazing for our oldest player, Ron Lewis, to play the singles and both men’s doubles events. He did himself proud and so fit for his age.

All 12 courts were full for the Singles event with 44 men and 12 women taking to the courts. The Singles results for nearly all sections were extremely close with the majority of players winning their section by 1 game. It was great to see more of the younger players, age 32-55 taking part in the singles this year. All promising for the future as many of us are getting older, which was evident by a number of withdrawals just prior to the tournament due to injuries. A huge thank you to the players who came into the tournament at the last minute, some with a few days’ notice, while others the morning of!!! I realise this tournament fills up very quickly, but how fortunate to have a reserve list to draw on.

As usual the Ladies and Men’s Doubles provided some amazing tennis. And of course, the Combined Age Mixed Doubles on the Saturday afternoon proved to be a lot of fun. Interesting to see the results with some of our regulars and many of the new players to Ulladulla taking out the Winners and/or Runners’ Up prizes. However the win of the tournament goes to the gorgeous and fun loving, Graeme Hissey in the Age Mixed Doubles on the Sunday afternoon. His first win of any tournament. I think Graeme has framed his white envelope. To all other category winners for the weekend, you know who you were, well done and we hope to see you back in 2023.

Once again, Ulladulla was provided with wonderful raffle prizes from Kay Philip- Mollymook Beach holiday house, $500 accommodation voucher from Discovery Park Burrill Lake, 2 tickets to the ATP Cup and a lovely Tennis Jewels clothing prize. Tennis NSW South East Region donated $250 which became the wine packages in the raffle. Thank you to all our players and visitors who supported the raffle.

A huge thank you to all the players who supported our tournament and for making it so enjoyable and a wonderful place to be for the 3 days. And last but not least, thank you to our many volunteers and committee members for bringing the tournament together.
